Jodie and Adam
Living room of Bellway home, Alkerden Heights

Our dream home was the priority

Living in their perfect home is the reward that Jodie, a 32-year-old operations manager, and Adam, a 34-year-old finance manager, are enjoying after cancelling their dream £30,000 wedding. The pair were due to tie the knot in a glamorous ceremony at a luxury wedding venue in September 2024, but instead put their wedding savings towards a deposit for their 3-bedroom dream home at Alkerden Heights, in Ebbsfleet Garden City, Kent.

Adam says: "We were living in a rented 2-bedroom apartment in Ebbsfleet Garden City and had a conversation, in the Christmas holidays in 2023, about buying our own house. We were fed up of paying out rent when we could try to get a joint mortgage and have our very own place. We had £10,000 saved up for the wedding but took the decision to cancel... after that, we put all our energy into finding a house – and organising a cheaper wedding on 4 June."

Move made possible by mortgage incentive

As they were living in the area, the couple had seen that Bellway were building new homes at Alkerden Heights.

"We went along to the development and spoke to Rachel in the sales office, who was incredible from the start," says Adam. "She was really friendly and knowledgeable and not at all pushy. She showed us a 3-bedroom Turner and we absolutely loved it. We thought it might be beyond our budget, but Bellway had a scheme whereby they would give a five per cent mortgage contribution and we used that to bolster our deposit and that made the payments affordable.

“We reserved as soon as we could and were given a moving-in date of 16 June. We asked Rachel if there was any way they could bring that date forward so that we could be in before our wedding day as it would make life so much less complicated and fraught. Amazingly, they did it and we got the keys on 13th May.”

A Bellway 'guard of honour'

Jodie was given a ‘guard of honour’ by Bellway staff when she left her new home to attend the local register office to tie the knot with Adam.

Jodie says: "I had no idea they were going to do that for me. It was organised by Rachel who knew that we had cancelled our big wedding day so we could buy the house. I stepped out of our front door to walk to the car, which was waiting to take me to meet Adam at the register office, when there was Rachel and some of the site team giving me a ‘guard of honour’. It was a total surprise and a lovely touch."

Rachel said: "Jodie and Adam are a lovely couple and when I first met them they told me how they cancelled their white wedding so they could buy a house with us. That shows incredible commitment and we really wanted to pull out all the stops to help them get into their new home before their new wedding day. It was great fun and it was lovely to see how much Jodie enjoyed it."

This house is perfect for us because it is future proofed... We know we made the right decision."

The right decision

For Jodie and Adam, their new house ticks a lot of boxes and fulfils the criteria they had when searching for a first home together.

Adam says: "We wanted to stay in the area because Jodie can drive to work in 20 minutes and I can catch a train from Ebbsfleet International station to get into St Pancras as I work in central London. It’s the perfect location for commuting.

"As for the house itself, the open-plan living and dining space really works for us as it spans the whole of the back of the house and has French doors out to our lovely south-facing garden. The kitchen is at the front and there is a natural free-flow feel to the place. This house is perfect for us because it is future proofed. We want to start a family soon so having three bedrooms means we can have a baby and not have to move. We know we made the right decision."
